Garland of Yorkshire

Thomas Garland was the son of Elizabeth Hatfield who died January 1577/78 at Todwick. He married Maria Beighton at Sheffield on 3 June 1561. Thomas died in 1609 and there is a memorial to him in Todwick church. Maria died 17 January 1611/12 at Todwick and was buried at Handsworth. Thomas and Maria had 5 children:

Maria's descendants, the Stacyes, were early settlers in Nottingham Township in New Jersey.

William Garland of Todwick married Dorothea Holt in 1593, and after Dorothea's death in 1604, married Isabella. Their children were:

John Garland married firstly Mary Revil, then Catherine Hatfield (b1604) of Ecclesfield. Their children:

Thomas Garland b 1646, of Throapham, married Mary Unknown. Their children:

John Garland (1669 -1711) married Susana Robnit at Stainton 12 September 1694. He was a churchwarden at Harthill. His children were:

John Garland b 1696, owner of The Croft at Gildingwells became a cloth dresser in Leeds. He married Mary Kaye at Hunslet in 1718. John voted at Leeds in 1741, holding property in Gildingwells. He was buried 3 July 1718 at Leeds St Peter. Their children:

John Garland (1722-1810) a clothier of Leeds, married Mary Benson at Throapham in 1774. He later bought Netherwood Hall near Darfield after inheriting a good deal of land from his cousin Elizabeth Garland. Their children:

John Garland (1775-1807) married Sarah White at Darfield in 1796, by license after two bonds. Their children:

John Garland (1797-1856) married Bertha Birks at Darfield on 9 December 1830 by license. Witnesses were Thomas Swift and Jane Birks, Bertha's younger sister. In 1832 John was one of a number of pew holders in Darfield church who petitioned the ministers, churchwardens and parishioners to the effect that they had no objection to the new gallery proposed by architect Mr Whitworth of Barnsley. The family continued to live at Netherwood Hall, and they had 12 children:

Julia Garland (1832-1887) married George Hawson, a farmer of Wombwell, at Darfield in 1853, and they lived at Hooton Roberts. Their children:

Jessie Hawson (1865-1940) married Charles Steers, a roofing contractor of Doncaster in 1883 at Doncaster. Charles built a bungalow in Bournemouth. They had 13 children, including:

Felicia Steers (1893-1975) b in Mexborough, married George Alfred Gibson, a miner, in 1920. Their children:

Renee Gibson married George Miles Thornton (1928-1998).
