Miles Thornton
Miles was born 27 January 1841 in Heck and baptised 28 February 1841 at Snaith. By 1861 he had moved away from Heck to work on the railways. He was a railway inspector in 1881 living at Mexborough, and his great nephew George Miles remembered him being described as stationmaster at Mexborough in later years, as indeed he is listed in the 1901 census.
He married Elizabeth Geary (daughter of Samuel Geary and Ann Hadfield, born c1845), of Rowsley, Derbyshire, at Chesterfield in 1863, and had 5 children:
In addition, Miles and Elizabeth brought up nephew William Thornton (1883-1966) after William's mother died in 1885. Elizabeth died in 1911, and Miles a year later. In 1911 they were still living at the Station House in Mexborough, with the present stationmaster, Ambrose Dickensen living with them as a lodger. They are buried in Mexborough cemetery.
