Gibson of Mexborough

Robert Gibson was born about 1800 in Mexborough, and became an agricultural labourer. There were a number of small farms at this time in what was to become a small mining and industrial town. In the early 1820s he married Sara ?, who had been born around 1796 in Mexborough. Sara died in 1852, Robert in 1877. Their known children were 

George was baptised 8 February 1824 at Mexborough. On 1 August 1848 he married Elizabeth Goodman at Sprotborough. Elizabeth had been born in Sheffield about 1825. At the time of his marriage, George was a stone quarryman, and by the time of the 1851 census was listed as a mason. He probably worked in the stone quarry which was in the Dolcliffe Common area of Mexborough.

George and Elizabeth had seven known children

Some time before 1891 George and Elizabeth moved to Glass House Row in Denaby Main, which was next to the Kilner glass works where son Walter worked.

George died about 1901. He was still listed as a mason's labourer in the 1901 census at the age of 75. Elizabeth died in 1907. Details of Anthony Gibson and his wife Clara Barber can be seen here.
